We opted to break from 'Victoriana' in the hallways as far as the lighting went. Track lighting isn't very 1880's, but it's sure more effective! Our electrician suggested suspending the track about 12 inches off the ceiling, allowing us better control in aiming the spots around the hallway.
When we have the paintcans out to re-paint the bedroom, we'll touch-up the ceiling paint everywhere the electrician removed old fixtures.
