The ground floor unit has converted back and forth between 2 units and a single unit, possibly multiple times already during its 120+ year life, but most recently was converted back to one unit after 20 years of being 2 units. It's recent conversion back into one unit basically involved opening up the interior doors on the two apartments, allowing the previous owners to travel back and forth between the two halves of the house.
Upon moving in we promptly removed the door to the back unit, leaving an empty doorframe in the middle of the front hallway (shown below). In the same spirit as the Doorway Project which united the back part of the house magnificently, we decided to also remove this unneeded hallway doorframe permanently.
